NEW BETS

A collection that comprises rarely viewed works of São Paulo’s big private art collections.

In this special room, in addition to Artur Lescher’s sculptures, works of different artists are gathered, which are part of the country’s important private collections. The very presence of a recognized personality such as Nelson Leirner, besides Jorge Guinle, Dudi Maia Rosa, Daniel Senise and Emanuel Nassar, among others, keeps us from saying that they are artists under the process of self-affirmation. All of them, at this point, have found their own career paths and receive recognition. But, the collectors themselves suggested presenting this less known facet of their collections.

NELSON LEIRNER

Here, it could be found works by Tarsila, Segall, de Volpi, Rego Monteiro, de Pancetti, Guignard, Sérgio Camargo, Maria Martins and many other art masters. However, the option is to show that not only safe acquisitions and blueships compose a true and meaningful collection. It is also composed of desire and courage for discoveries and new bets, not only in profitable terms, but also in qualitative/artistic terms. When they were acquired, some of the works found in this room were merely a bet. The buyers were certain they were worth the risk, though. And, in this specific case, it ended up being a winning bet, in both senses.

JORGE GUINLE

It is important to point out that a guiding line does not exist; there is no such a thing as monolith in their choices, as if some sort of language were, initially, better than the others. In this collection, figurative and abstract art coexist, as well as commitment, bitter irony (as in Leiner’s work), elegance, internationality and the search for the Brazilian roots, even the popular ones. That’s what it is, lyricism, high expressivity, balance and construction. Firstly, what holds all works together is the bidimensional surface; the fact that they aim at the wall, where the painting stands out. Secondly, the competence and the rightfulness of each work in relation to their purpose. Different languages demand different rightfulness.

Artur Lescher, who deservedly joins the other artists, becomes a special guest. He is the only sculptor in the group. At 44, Lescher is not only one of the exponents of the new Brazilian sculpture; due to the clarity and rightfulness of his work, he is on his way to rapidly become a classic, one more winning beat.
